On September 14, 2006, Dr. John Bowers passed from this life into the presence of the Lord. He passed away at his home in Pico Rivera, California, where he resided with his wife of 53 years, Betty; he was 72 years old. Dr. Bowers is survived by his wife as well as their three daughters, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

John Bowers grew up in Martinsburg, W.Va., where he met and married Betty. Following graduation from Life Bible College in 1956, the Bowerses served as pioneer pastors and senior pastors at various churches throughout the Eastern District. Dr. Bowers also served as the field secretary of the Eastern District and as a faculty member at Mount Vernon Bible College. After moving to Los Angeles in 1965, Dr. Bowers served The Foursquare Church in several departments, including youth and Christian education; he and Betty pastored the Foursquare church in Alhambra, Calif., for a portion of their time at the central office. Dr. Bowers served as the assistant general supervisor before assuming the office of the corporate secretary, a position he held for 12 years until his retirement in 1999. He received a 50-year service award at the 2006 convention in Washington, D.C.; the award was a well-deserved celebration of his lifetime of remarkable service in the kingdom and in The Foursquare Church. Dr. Bowers’ commitment to and investment in The Foursquare Church–along with his commitment to and investment in people–will never be forgotten. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
