This very in-depth and helpful video from Foreign Policy Association explains the political upheaval and tensions that led to the Syrian civil war. It includes interviews with former U.S. ambassadors to the region and many leaders in aid agencies and the U.N. It emphasizes helping the countries surrounding Syria to deal with the huge number of refugees they have received and to keep stability in the region.
