The Lord was dealing with me once about sin in my life and I responded quickly by asking for forgiveness. It became evident, though, that my confession was not enough. I responded appropriately (so I thought), and concluded that the Lord would honor my sincere response and apply the forgiveness that I now sought.

That’s when I realized that the Lord was pressing me into an arena for which I was not prepared. He was not interested in just forgiving me—He wanted to deliver me from the hold that this particular sin had on my life. It was one thing to discover that I had “missed the mark;” it was another thing to realize that I had been trapped by the power of a sin that laid claim to an area of my life God was not willing to give away.

Are you winning the battle or losing the battle? I’d like to pose a different question: Are you even fighting the battle? It’s possible that you have no clue that the enemy has dug his claws deep (1 John 1:8), while the Lord and others may be working to set you free (1 John 1:9). Listen intently to the Lord’s voice and respond appropriately to the counsel of godly friends and family. You’ll be glad you did, and the freedom you experience will produce a joy like no other!

“Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” -1 Peter 5:8 (NIV)
