Life is always lived out best when you hold three things in tension: the past, the present and the future. Our own movement’s theme verse is, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Heb. 13:8, NKJV).
In April we celebrated Holy Week, remembering that those in Jerusalem some 2,000 years ago were walking out past prophecy, participating in current realities, and all the while setting the stage for the future.
Foursquare has entered an important season of transition, as well. We have been engaged in prayerful consideration for our next president. Intentional processes involving six Presidential Forums, all of which are available to rewatch at 4sq.ca/election2019, have given a platform for the two capable candidates, Tammy Dunahoo and Randy Remington, to share their vision concerning the future of our movement. That final election will take place during Foursquare Connection 2019, which will be held in Nashville, Tenn., May 27-30.
Our theme this year is “Restored by Jesus,” and we look forward to celebrating many of the miraculous things God has done through His people and His church during connection. We’ll worship together, learn together through top-notch speakers, and see all that the Lord can do and restore when we gather in His name. Debbie and I have so enjoyed these past 10 years of kingdom partnership with you. Just like the incoming president will do when they take office in 2020, we live and lead between a past worth remembering and celebrating, a present filled with both challenges and opportunities, and a future that will help usher in the return of Jesus. All leaders manage those realities. We pray daily for a fresh anointing on the next president and on our movement, nationally and globally.
The Lord has raised up this family as an expression of His plan for these final days of harvest. May we burn with a fervor, born by the Holy Spirit, to seek after those far from God.
Foursquare is uniquely wired for these days. We are interdenominational, passionate for the harvest, globally focused and Christ-centered. We are relational, moderate in our practices and balanced in our theology. Our indigenous missiology has allowed our movement to grow 50 times larger outside the United States. Many of those nations now have multiple missionary units in dozens of other countries, including here. It’s a fabulous time to watch God’s future over the church unfold.
According to Elmer Towns, co-founder of Liberty University, in the early 1900s only between 3 and 4 percent of the Christian world was Pentecostal, but the Azusa Street Revival changed all of that. That number has since quadrupled, according to the Pew Research Center. I only say that to emphasize that the Lord has raised up this family as an expression of His plan for these final days of harvest. May we burn with a fervor, born by the Holy Spirit, to seek after those far from God. And in doing so, be a part helping fulfill what the apostle John saw written in his Book of Revelation, a gathering of every tongue and tribe around the throne in heaven.
The past is worth celebrating and leaning from. The present is worth our very best efforts of prayer and worship, evangelism, discipleship and multiplication. And the future has no limits to those willing to flow in the river of God’s prophetic assignment.
