Samuel told a young Saul that he would be the king of Israel, yet nothing seemed to change in his life. Saul still carried on as usual, and no one followed him.
Then, one day, some of his countrymen were in trouble, and Saul took action (1 Sam. 11). He ultimately earned his place as a leader and became someone others chose to follow.
Titles, declarations by others, authority and even appointments don’t make leaders.
When people lead—find solutions, engage situations with a new anointing and align their lives with the timing of God—others take notice and follow willingly. We make too much of titles—and we make too little of anointing along with God’s favor and timing.
What kind of leader are you? In what ways might you be leaning too much on a title? How might you lean into finding solutions, engaging people and living out your anointing?
Reflect + Pray
1. Ask God for a heart open to solutions and actions you can undertake to be a better leader, and for humility when leadership falls to you.
2. Whom is God leading you to anoint as a future leader, and how can you pour into them and disciple them? Pray for guidance and wisdom.
3. Sept. 5 is the International Day of Charity. Consider how your congregation can give in a tangible, personal way on a big (global) and small (community) scale. What giving can you encourage for the Lord’s glory?
4. As we welcome President-Elect Randy Remington, let’s pray for God’s anointing and wisdom as he transitions into this new role for The Foursquare Church.
