Today I woke up tired after seven and a half hours of sleep. I wanted to pull the covers up around my neck and drift back into a heavy rest. Not a “snooze for 10 more minutes” rest, but a “fresh out of the shower, it’s been a long day, see you in the morning” kind of rest.

In my head I thought that I needed a do-over. But my heart cried out for what I really needed: “God, please usher me back into Your presence. Restore in me the peace and joy that only come from an intimate encounter with You.”

I needed the kind of encounter that we busy folk find ourselves not missing until we wake up tired.

I challenge you today to pursue the comprehensive renewal that can only come when we voluntarily or involuntary submit to true rest (Mark 2:22).

In a world that demands for transitional leaders to “stay woke,” I remind you that it is well with your soul.

Now, rest.

Reflect + Pray

1. Rest is therapeutic for mind, body and spirit. Pray for the Holy Spirit to regularly usher you into times of restorative rest.

2. God-size revelation should not be relegated to worn-out vessels. Pray for a new framework upon which God can do a new thing.

3. Your commitment to rest is an acknowledgment of your dependence on God to be God. Pray against the prideful belief that you can perform under your strength alone.

4. Pray, also, for restorative rest for our Foursquare chaplains serving around the country. Download the monthly prayer guide here.
