When a shepherd boy named David went to meet his brothers on the battlefield, he encountered a giant named Goliath (1 Sam. 17). David seemed unmatched in stature, but he asked a question that gives us a glimpse into his courage.
He asked, “For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (v.26, NKJV).
David identified that Goliath, uncircumcised, was living outside the covenant of Almighty God. What appeared to be an impossible problem to everyone else seemed to David to be a conquerable enemy. He engaged this threat without hesitation because he knew that Goliath placed his confidence in his capabilities and not in God. David had the upper hand because he was fighting the Lord’s battle, not his own.
Make sure the battle you’re fighting is the right one. Be certain you know where your confidence lies. A slingshot and stone will always defeat a giant and his spear when the power behind the stone is heaven-sent.
Reflect + Pray
1. Think about a conflict in your life at present. Do you feel like you are on the right side of the battle? Does your confidence come from the Lord? Confess and release to Him any battles you are facing in your own strength.
2. Ask God for the wisdom of David, to discern God’s will in conflicts, and for the courage of David when you face opposition.
3. Thank God for the freedoms we enjoy in this country. Ask Him to give our leaders and citizens wisdom, peace and a spirit of harmony as we observe Independence Day.
4. Pray for all Foursquare members serving on short-term missions trips with Foursquare Missions International this summer. Ask the Lord to open new hearts to His Good News, and to energize and unify those ministering.
