The Foursquare family honors the life of Pastor Harlyn Matson, Ph.D., a beloved pastor, leader and friend, who was called home to be with the Lord on April 6, 2025. Known for his humility, wisdom and unwavering faith, Harlyn leaves behind a profound legacy that has shaped both local communities and the global Church.

Harlyn and his wife, Jeri, were the founding pastors of 180 Church in Rocklin, California, where they faithfully ministered for over 43 years. Their influence extended far beyond their home church as they helped plant and support numerous churches throughout Placer County and the surrounding region.
A gifted communicator and teacher, Harlyn held a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies and was deeply committed to modeling biblical stewardship. Recognized for his integrity and vision, he was hand-selected by then President Paul Risser to launch and lead the Foursquare Retirement Plan, which he chaired from its inception in 1999 until his passing. He also served as Chairman of Foursquare Financial Solutions, Director of Planned Giving (2010–2020) and as a long-standing member of the Investment Committee and RDC Marketing Subcommittee.
“Harlyn Matson dedicated his life to helping others maximize the stewardship of their resources,” said Glenn Burris Jr., former president of The Foursquare Church. “He was generous with his own life toward others, being first an example. He was a great gift to The Foursquare Church with his wisdom, his time and his dedication.”
His leadership reached far beyond financial strategy. Harlyn and Jeri were also deeply invested in global missions, especially in Burundi, Africa, where they helped launch multiple ministries including the Hope Medical Center, Hope Sewing School, Hope Computer School and the Hope Birthing Center. These projects, born from Jeri’s vision and brought to life through their shared obedience to God’s call, have impacted countless lives through healthcare, education and empowerment.

“He was a tremendous blessing to our Foursquare family,” said Adam Davidson, Vice President of The Foursquare Church. “He loved Jesus, His people and The Foursquare Church.”
More than his titles or accomplishments, Pastor Harlyn was a man who lived out 1 Corinthians 11:1 — “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend whose life pointed others to Jesus in both word and action.
While we mourn his passing, we rejoice in knowing that Harlyn is now at peace in the presence of the Savior he trusted his whole life. In place of flowers, the Matson family invites those who feel led to honor his legacy by supporting Hearts Without Borders, a ministry close to his heart.
