KEEP THE MAIN THING THE MAIN THING

The start of a new year is a great catalyst for leadership refocusing. It is a moment to stop and ask God how to lead into this next season. I love hearing what God is saying to you! I have been hearing a common new year’s theme from our pastors and leaders: Keep the main thing, the main thing. Keep the kingdom of God over all things.

A fun metaphor about this comes from NFL player Cooper Kupp, a Yakima boy (whose parents attend a Foursquare church). Cooper has just won the triple crown for receivers—most touchdowns, receiving yards and catches. In a recent interview, he connected his football success to the many hours of his childhood spent in ball-catching drills with his dad. The main thing in his football career was and still is catching the ball. It’s simple, but it makes a lot of sense.

Our “main thing” is summed up in the Great Command and the Great Commission:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. … Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matt. 22:37-39, NIV). And “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” (Matt. 28:19-20).

Jesus and His Kingdom will always be our “Main Thing.”

As we step into 2022, let’s not get distracted by other things, regardless of how good, bad or urgent they might seem. Let’s stay focused on our united Foursquare goal of “more and growing leaders together on mission.”

Let’s keep the Main Thing as our main thing.
