Journey of Faith (Seattle West Alki Foursquare Church) in Seattle, Wash., doesn’t just have a ministry for the next generation—they are the next generation.
The church was an unlikely venture for retired Microsoft employee Serena Wastman. But the non-traditional ministry to the skater crowd is right where Serena knows God wants her to be.
The senior pastor of Journey of Faith addressed the Foursquare Connection 2012 audience in bare feet and a big smile.
“The church of tomorrow is going to look different than the church of today,” Serena told the crowd. “It’s the same Jesus, the same Bible. But this next gen is comprehending Christ in a different way.”
She noted that in their area of West Seattle, 30 percent of kids are currently homeless; many are on drugs. The church has partnered with other local churches and denominations to love the kids in their area and plug them into discipleship programs, with many kids eventually stepping into leadership positions at their church.
While Serena admits with a grin that she never thought she would be the one to pastor skaters, the task keeps her motivated, not anxious.
“I don’t see challenges,” she affirms. “I don’t see the cup half empty; I believe in a God of the impossible. I’m excited for this next generation.”
