As four pastors conclude their five-year terms on the Foursquare board of directors, they take time to share about what they’ve learned while serving in this role.

Board members help guide the corporation’s management and the Foursquare movement’s missional effectiveness. The board includes four officers, two members selected by the ministers of our six districts (12), and up to nine appointed members.

With their terms of service concluding on August 31, 2024, they leave us with these final words about what the board really does and how it serves local church leaders.

“On behalf of The Foursquare Church, I would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to these outgoing board directors for their exemplary and dedicated service.” —Adam Davidson, corporate secretary and vice president of administrative operations

Herman Scales, senior pastor, Seed of Faith International (Raytown Foursquare Church) in Raytown, Mo., Central District

A longtime bi-vocational leader, Herman is the founder and executive director of Better at Home Services. The agency provides services to elderly and handicapped residents in the metropolitan Kansas City area. He has also served in management roles at three major corporations.

Herman says he was most surprised by the spiritual aspect of his board service, adding that “the strong feeling of doing God’s work was always foremost in my mind. I was also somewhat surprised that while the board certainly contains some very special and influential ranking members, there are also ordinary pastors and leaders on the board.”

His varied educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in business administration and a minor in computer science from Strayer College. He has two professional certifications, an honorary doctorate from Freedom Bible College and numerous certificates in biblical studies.

Herman and his wife, Myra, founded Seed of Faith in Lee’s Summit, Mo., in 2003. After relocating to the Raytown Foursquare Church, it became Seed of Faith International. He has been married to Myra for 37 years and has three children from his first marriage to Elizabeth Scales, who is deceased. He also has three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Kurt Fuller, senior pastor, The Warehouse (La Habra West Foursquare Church) in Whittier, Calif., Western District

Kurt has a wide variety of ministry positions in his background, including eight years as a high school pastor, 11 years of executive leadership with Foursquare Missions International (FMI), and 16 years as a church planter and senior leader.

The Warehouse started as a home Bible study in 2007 and eventually transitioned into a church. Its goal is to be a loving community seeking to restore and strengthen families.

What surprised him most about serving as a board member was the relationships that he formed, the refreshing aspect of the collective wisdom and spiritual depth of other board members, and the culture of unity.

“All decisions were made with the local church pastor in mind,” Kurt shares. “We serve them through putting healthy guardrails around theology, our polity, and our orthopraxy. Members should be aware that board members are wise, godly men and women who love Jesus and His church.”

Kurt completed his Bachelor of Arts in pastoral studies at LIFE Bible College (now known as Life Pacific University, LPU) in 1990 and his Master of Arts in pastoral studies at Azusa Pacific University in 2000.

He and his wife, Robin, have two children, Jessica O’Brien and Jonathan Fuller, and three grandchildren. In his spare time, Kurt enjoys mountain biking, restoring cars, playing pickleball, doing do-it-yourself projects and traveling.

Elwin Ahu, founding pastor, Metro Christian Church (Honolulu Metropolitan Foursquare Church) in Honolulu, Pacific District

Elwin brought a vast educational and occupational background to his service, which included serving as an attorney and judge from 1980-2000 and as an executive pastor from 2000-2011. He planted Metro Christian Church in 2012 and remained as senior pastor until 2020.

In the beginning, his board service included early morning conference calls. He jokes that he had to look “somewhat decent” for Zoom sessions during the pandemic but says it was time well spent and without regrets.

“It’s important that members of the board continue to be comprised of local leaders, pastors and people involved in local church ministry,” Elwin says. “As such, board decisions will always be made only after considering their decision on the local ministry context and with the best interests of our local leaders in mind.”

Elwin earned his Bachelor of Arts in education at Graceland University in 1976 and a Juris Doctor at William Richardson School of Law in 1980. He also completed a Master of Arts in Strategic Leadership (MASL) at LPU in 2020. He and his wife, Joy, have two sons (Brandon and Jared) and two grandchildren (Alana and Hokua). In his spare time, Elwin enjoys travel and golf.

Rohan Anderson, lead pastor, Capital Church (Vienna VA Foursquare Church) in Vienna, Va., Atlantic District

Rohan has served in various roles in the nonprofit and church communities, including as a family coordinator for a foster care agency. Starting in 2016, he served as associate pastor and then senior pastor of The Gathering Place (Marion Foursquare Church) in Marion, Ohio. He remained there until transitioning to Capital Church in April 2023.

He says what surprised him the most about his board service were the “hard issues” directors had to discuss that impacted the entire Foursquare family.

“The board’s care for local leaders is evident when we encourage our district council at monthly meetings,” he states. “And, when we offer to listen to leaders at our one-day regional events, Foursquare Leadership Conferences and Connection.”

Rohan has an associate degree in pastoral ministry, personal development certifications, and leadership and coaching certifications from the John Maxwell Group.

He and his wife, Meggon, have been married for 30 years. They have two daughters and two grandchildren. Their youngest daughter is a graduate of LPU’s Virginia campus and is serving in an internship at Thrive Worship Center (Concord Thrive Foursquare Church) in Concord, N.C.

A word of thanks to the board members

“On behalf of The Foursquare Church, I would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to these outgoing board directors for their exemplary and dedicated service,” says Adam Davidson, the denomination’s corporate secretary and vice president of administrative operations. “They have sacrificially given their time, prayers and expertise to Foursquare in an effort to increase its effectiveness at this strategic and critical time in history.”
