I remember my father praying in his spiritual language all the time.

He prayed earnestly for all us kids to be filled with the Spirit of God and talked to us frequently about speaking in tongues. There is something special about a father’s desire for his kids to have such closeness with God.

I once asked him, “Dad, why do you speak in tongues?” He quoted 1 Corinthians 14:4, “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself” and Psalm 61: “I will cry to you, when my heart is overwhelmed.” Dad was training me to believe that God supplied a provision for anxiety through the gift of tongues.

When we pray in tongues, we are relieved of the pressures and anxieties of life. When my heart is overwhelmed, when I can’t connect all the dots, when I can’t see ahead, when I don’t understand the pain I’m in, the Lord hears me and understands, and this expression of faith moves His heart.

Praying in the Spirit saturates us with the presence of God. In a world where anxiety is prominent, when our hearts are overwhelmed, we can go to the rock higher than ourselves (Psalm 61).
